What This Tool Helps You Find

This tool helps you answer one important question: what grade do I need on my final?

You can use it to estimate the score required on your final exam, check whether your target grade is still possible, and see how your expected exam result may affect your overall course grade.

It is useful for quick grade planning before finals, especially when your final exam has a set weight in the course.

How to Use the Calculator

Enter your current grade, which is your course grade before the final.

Next, enter your target grade, which is the final course grade you want to reach.

Then, add the final exam weight. For example, if your final counts as 25% of your course grade, enter 25.

You can also enter an expected exam score to estimate your final course result after the exam.

Current Grade, Target Grade, and Final Exam Weight

Your current grade means your class score before the final exam. It may include coursework, assignment, homework, quiz, test, project, and midterm scores.

Your target grade is the score you want after the final. For example, you may want a 90% for an A grade, or a 70% to pass the course.

Your final exam weight tells how much the final exam counts toward your total course score. You can usually find this in your grading policy or course syllabus.

Common examples include:

Final Exam WeightMeaning
10%Final has a small effect
20%Final can change your grade
25%Final has strong weight
30%Final is very important
40%Final can heavily affect your result
50%Final is half of your course grade

Formula Used by the Calculator

The required final exam score formula is:

Required final score = (Target grade – Current grade × (1 – Final exam weight)) ÷ Final exam weight

Use the final exam weight as a decimal.

Example:

25% final weight = 0.25

The final course grade formula is:

Final course grade = Current grade × (1 – Final exam weight) + Final exam score × Final exam weight

This works as a weighted average because your current coursework and final exam may not count equally.

Example Calculation

Suppose your current grade is 80%, your target grade is 90%, and your final exam is worth 25%.

Formula:

Required final score = (90 – 80 × (1 – 0.25)) ÷ 0.25

Required final score = (90 – 60) ÷ 0.25

Required final score = 120%

This means you would need more than 100% on the final, so the target may not be possible unless your class allows extra credit or another grading adjustment.

Percentage Grade and Letter Grade

Some classes use a percentage grade, while others use a letter grade.

A simple grading scale may look like this:

Letter GradePercentage
A grade90% and above
B grade80% to 89%
C grade70% to 79%
D grade60% to 69%
F gradebelow 60%

Your school or instructor may use a different grading scale, so always check your syllabus for the official rules.

When the Result Is Over 100%

If the result is over 100%, your target grade may be difficult to reach with the final exam alone.

This does not always mean you failed the course. It simply means the required exam score is higher than a normal test score.

In this case, check whether your class allows extra credit, dropped assignments, test corrections, or other grading options.

When the Result Is Below 0%

If the result is 0% or below, your target grade is already safe based on your current grade and the final exam weight.

You should still take the final seriously, but it means you need a very low score to stay at your target.

This usually happens when your current grade is already much higher than your goal.

Who Can Use This Tool

This calculator works for most school, high school, college, and university courses where the final exam has a fixed weight.

It can help with semester grade planning, study planning, passing grade checks, and understanding how much the final exam can affect your result.

For the most accurate result, use the same numbers shown in your syllabus or online gradebook.
